No, I haven't gone into the auto dealing business. This is a message about a
car that I very nearly bought; it would have been a damn good bargain, so I'm
passing the news on to you, in the hope that nobody else has snapped it up yet.
The car is an white Acura Integra RS 5-door 5-speed. Road&Track reviewed this
car and determined that its performance and handling were at least on a par
with those of the Scirocco and the Celica GT-S. I reviewed it and determined
that four people of my height (5'10") can comfortably get into it, with room
left over for non-trivial amounts of luggage. Try doing that in a Scirocco!
Good gas mileage and Japanese quality and reliability (Honda) are built-in.
All this plus an air conditioner can be yours for the princely sum of $11,250
plus tax and stuff (total about $12,300) if you stroll down to Acura of
Mountain View (on El Camino just south of Bernardo) and make them an offer.
Assuming, of course, that they haven't sold the car -- but I test drove it a
week and a half ago and they hadn't sold it as of yesterday afternoon. Ask for
Hugh. BTW, Acura of Mt.Vw. are an order of magnitude less slimy and greedy
than the average car dealer. For a really bad experience, visit Sunnyvale
Mazda like I did.
I truly do believe this would be excellent value for your money.

I second Richard's opinion on the Integra. When shopping for cars last
summer with my girlfriend, we tried a lot of cars. It was the best, especialy
for the price we got then (8990 + the bull). She got it at Acura of MV.
The only competition to speak of was the Accord, but for the price of the
Accord DX, she could get the equiv of the LXi.
After hearing many good reports from myself and my girlfriend, my mother
decided that was the car she was looking for as well (she bought hers in
Illinois, where she lives). Haven't heard a complaint from her yet.
The car is wonderful. However, the service people at Acura of MV seem to
be the type who enjoy giving you the runaround. I"d check at other dealers
to see what kind of service dept they have.
I also agree that Mazda of Sunnyvale are a bunch of jerks. Stay away from
that place...but check out the 626. Nice car. Nice price.

Subject: Datsun, Brakes ; Midas
I am in the process (as yet incomplete) of buying a datsun 310 GX and
had a couple of questions i would check out with the bboarders...
The problem:
Consumer Reports says that this car has a "BELOW AVERAGE
PERFORMANCE" as far as the BRAKES are concerned. I was wondering if
there was anybody who has owned a 310 who could comment. The reason i
ask this question is that the brakes of the car i am looking at
squealed a lot during the test. so i took the car to Midas Brakes. The
mechanic there said that the rotors (left and right) of the front disk
brakes were warped and had to be fixed (gave me an estimate of $450 +
tax). The mechanic attributed it to th efact that the current owner had
allowed moisture to condense in the brake lines. And that since the
owner had not done the regular 6 month check on the brakes the cast
iron in the brake system had rusted (hastened by the thermal heat of
constant friction from initial warping).
The questions:
Is this a COMMON PROBLEM (which will recur even with regular
care ? Or can it be avoided ?
Is there a PLACE other than Midas FOR GOOD BRAKE jobs? (how does
the Midas PRICING COMPARE ...with other mechanics in the area?).
Does anyone know of GOOD MECHANICS for datsun's in the area?
I would appreciate early responses as i have to take a quick decision
If there is any information of a general nature, i will compile it and
let others kno about it.
Thanks
PRASAD

My personal opinion is that the Midas guy is lying. First of all, I've
never heard of moisture condensing in brake lines -- it's a sealed system
and wouldn't affect the rotors directly. Plus, $450 seems a bit
steep for that kind of work.
I don't have any better suggestions for brake work, but you owe it to
yourself to look elsewhere. Midas just radiates sleaze.
Come to think of it...
You might try Auto Dynamics in Menlo Park for an estimate. They are a
bit pricey, but I've heard good things about their quality from people I've
talked to.

Jamie/Glenn,
Thanks for your responses.
I would like to clarify two points:
* yes . We did notice fading of the brakes (a grip-no grip cycle).
Additionally the brakes were 'spongy'. In fact it was this which drew our
attention to the possibilities of brake problems.
* The rotors were warped but not rusted...... the Midas guy said that
the heating of the water caused corrosion in the brake system ( i would guess
that the brake cylinder is of cast iron which would rust). The combined effect
(water, heat from brakes, greater drag on brakes, heat, warpage) was escalating
. (perhaps improper setting of the brakes which triggered off this spiral
which was not contained by preventive maintenance).
My other concern was:
* is this a COMMON sort of PROBLEM (for i just cannot afford to spend
$450 every 1.5 yrs...) for cars in general and for datsun 310's in particular.
I consulted a friend's friend who owned a 310.He said he had no problems till
93K (when he had thing fixed to sell the car).
I am not too sure what he billed me for on the estimate.... I only have
a "parts" = $ xxx" and "labour = $ yyy" statement right now.
Also, what, in general are regular WARRANTY PERIODS on brake jobs?
Does one buy safety by going to a mechanic who is pricey but gives a
long (how long?) warranty on parts & labour ?
prasad

←I would never take a car to Midas, or have much faith in anything they
said. I forgot the details, but I remember reading that many Midas
shops (including the one on El Camino in Palo Alto) have been
prosecuted by the Consumer Affairs Department of the State of
California, and operate under some kind of "consent order". (I think
that means they agree not to do it again). They were caught for
misleading advertising: they advertised low prices for brake jobs, but
had an excuse for almost everyone about why it should be higher in
their case. Now their advertising stresses the free inspection thing:
I am convinced that the free inspection will result in almost all
cases in the finding that something serious is wrong with the brake
system, and that expensive new parts are needed.
Note that places like Midas (and similar heavily-advertised chains)
never repair anything. All they do is replace as many parts as they
can get away with. If you want to give money away, you should
consider a charity.
I think that Bergh's Wheel Alignment in Palo Alto does brake work, and
I know that they are honest. They charged me about half of the initial
estimate for an alignment job because not much work was required.

I think that you should have the brakes looked at by someone other than Midas.
From you description, I am not sure what is wrong, but I think that Midas
is handing you a line. Also, I find it unlikely that any brake work should
cost $450.

When I called another place after it appeared that Midas had severely
messed up on my girlfriends car, I heard the mechanic yell to the
boss after hearing only a fraction of my story
"Hey, Steve we got another car thats been ruined by Midas"
a little later on he told me
"yeah, I worked at Midas for about a month, after I saw what they
were doing, though, I decided to get a real job."
---Liam
The other place was Steve's Foreign Auto. They know what they are doing
but I cant recommend them, because they are quite expensive, and overworked
( always hard to get an appointment). These last two though may be related
to the fact that they know what they are doing.
Oh, yeah, the damage Midas did was that they bent an axle (due to improper
hoisting of the car) which in turn cracked a seal on the transmission
which caused all the fluid to leak out which caused the transmission to
burn up. They did not tell her this, of course. In fact when she brought
it back the mechanic took it for a test drive and claimed there was nothing
wrong even thoughthe car vibrated like crazy and would not shift gears
(the car is a semi-automatic). Ooops, scratch the mechanic, it was
actually the manager of the Palo Alto Midas which tok the car for
the test drive. Their insurance company eventually paid to fix the
axle and the transmission (a rebuild) after amonth or two of hassles.

My knowlege of cars is limited to the concept that if you put the key in
and twist it, the engine starts. If it won't start then something is wrong
with the key. Given that - I've found Midas to be uninspiring of trust.
They wanted to do 4-5 hundred dollars of brake work on my rusty ole pinto
(something akin to chromeplating a marshmellow). It would seem to me
that the person who created the chain might have had a wry smile when he/she
dipped into classic mythology to come up with the name Midas. Perhaps
had he thought harder he would have chanced upon the Golden Fleece.
And now let me quote from a message I sent to a friend when I first learned
how to count cards.
"... When the pit boss saw me win a triple like this he walked over
and whispered in the dealer's ear and she started to shuffle every
other hand. So I (brashly) walked to another table. The pit boss
walked over and said in a stage whisper - this young man is playing
games with us and then he turned towards me with his clenched crooked
yellow teeth and hissed, and we don't like games. If I had the sang
froid of Cary Grant I would have told him, "Don't play bean bag with
your arteries buster cause they're libel to break like pipestems."
instead I have only the sang froid of Oliver Laurel and little enough
of that.* I retained enough composure not to hit a 20 and then ran out
of the casino."
*sj perelman has the distinction of having said this before me"
Things to think about.
You don't have to be stuffing potatoe sacks with black chips before you get
their attention.
Let us not forget that the Mafia has a very strong hand in casino operation.
The moderates in their lot think that one concrete shoe is plenty.
The dealers may not rival Doug Henning but they are adept with cards --
if a dealer wants to make the jack of spades jump out and and squirt
an orange pip in your ear she'll do it and you won't notice. The same
goes for dealing you seconds.
Don't sit at a table where people have orange juice running out of any
their ears.

When I needed a muffler about a year ago, I went to Midas. They gave
me a quote, and said that it was the lowest--guaranteed. So I said "thank
you very much, I'll check around." I checked around (by calling every
mufler shop in the phone book), got a lower quote from a real sleazy place
in Menlo Park, and took it back to Midas. After a little shit from the
Midas guy (he even called the other shop to verify the quote), he agreed
to do it for the price I was quoted.
The muffler hasn't falled off yet...but I did watch while they worked on
my car.
BTW, this was at the Midas on El Camino at Arastradero/Charleston

Well at that same Midas shop, over a year ago, they twice messed up my
Volvo which I then took to a dealer to fix.
So when I had to have some (unrelated) muffler work done last week, I
took the Volvo to AUTO DYNAMICS on El Camino in Menlo Park. They quoted
the lowest price of 4 shops I tried (over the phone), then they further
reduced the price when I said I'm from Stanford, and most important, they
did a truly professional job.

(P.S. My sister tok her car to a Midas in NY. They wanted to do all kinds
of un-necessary work. Methinks they're a "distributed" ripoff.)

I'm trying to find the cheapest auto insurance available. I've never
owned a car before, and I've only had a California license for 2 months.
Does anyone have any advice on what's the cheapest insurance around?
I know AAA is cheap to start up if you've been a CA driver for a year,
but is there any other company that doesn't have horrendous startup fees?

If you're a AAA member, AAA's insurance is probably the cheapest (it was
for me). Cal Casualty came in second. As it turned out, even if I wasn't
a AAA member (and therefore had to buy a membership to get the insurance),
the toal cost of membership+insurance STILL would have been lower than
Cal Casualty.
Suggest you check SAIL[P,DOC]; there have been extensive discussions on
this topic in the past.

Yes, but Cal Cas is a **pain** to deal with. Here's why ---
1. You can't reach them, except by telephone, because they are way out there.
2. Trying to get to the person you want to talk to (over the phone) always
takes a lot of time.
3. They seem to be quite disorganized (at least the people I've dealt with), and
so everything takes a lot more effort than really necessary. For example,
there was (in my case) a discrepancy between our agreement on the phone
and the written documents (they come in the mail). Getting such things
fixed takesa lot of time and effort.

We bought one recently at the Futon shop on El Camino (near Meadow). It's
a fold-out couch/bed model, double, and cost us $380, with 14-layer futon
and arms. The Futon Shop seemed to be about the most reasonably priced
place around here, and even then we spent more than we anticipated. There
are a bunch of options, too: do you want arms on the couch; what kind of
wood should it be made out of; should it fold out into a bed; what
size do you want; what thickness of futon (i.e. # of layers); do you
want a futon cover; do you want pillows; etc.
Hope this helps; might want to try Japan Town in SF as well.

I got a futon frame from the futon shop at el camino real (app 2 miles
south of campus - to your left) - But that was a real killer to get it.
Futon frames are expensive stuff, so when you get one you will expect it
to be without scratches (sorry for spelling, came here only 4 months ago!)
and poorly drilled holes. The first one I got I had to bring back, well
that kind of things happens. The second one I had to bring back too.
The girl in the shop was really nice, so she ordered some more. Bad shape
too. So I finally gave up and wanted my money back (appx 300). I had
to fight all the way to the boss, in order to get any respond in all.
Then he would not return the money, but offered us an other frame, that
were supposed to be of a better quality for the same price. The girl
in the shop was smart enough to order two of them, just to be sure.
When we went through them in the shop we succeded to put one together
from the different parts.
The frames I have seen in chelsey waterbed shop seemed to be of the
same quality. There was a shop further south. Maybe 7-8 blocks south
of san antonio to the right, where they had some that looked like real
quality, but I have forgotten the name of the place.
So bevare - and good luck!

has lots of frames and offers a hefty discount to stanford students.
Ask for it. I got about 15% off. I bought a ~$115 frame from
them and it was a little rickety after I jumped on it a few times,
but I fixed it with some metal brackets. "Amenities" on the west
side of El Camino in MV by Togo's also has many frames, but they are
typically a little more expensive.

I have seen frames in futon stores for at least $400, so the price club deal

I'm in the modem market (yes I know this is su-computers) and saw an ad

(It doesn't really give a model number.) I'd like to know if anyone has
had good or bad experiences with such a modem. (The place selling them
is named 'Softline'.)

I need some advice about jewelers. Can anyone point me the way to
the best jewelers in the area? By "best" I mean those that provide the
greatest quality at the most reasonable cost, but I suppose this goes
without saying. In particular, I am in the market for a diamond ring.
I must admit being mostly ignorant in the business of significant
jewelry purchases, and this brings me to ask the following. Is the
price that is quoted you by a salesperson at a jeweler (which, at the
very least, causes you to lose your breath for an instant) really the
firm figure? Or is it like buying a car, where the seller fully expects
to do a little bargaining and will most likely settle for an offer well
below the sticker price? My understanding is that most jewelers mark up
items by some horrible factor like 300%, so it seems to me that they
certainly *should* be receptive to a little dealing.
Also, what are the various classifications of diamonds, what do
these labels say about their quality and appearance, and how does all
this affect their market value? I have heard of some diamonds being
classified as "slightly flawed" (or something like that) and selling for
for below the cost of an otherwise identical "perfect" stone, but that
the difference could be determined only by a genuine appraiser. What
about this?
One more thing: What are the usual financing arrangements available
to one who is making such an expensive purchase? How much down, how
much per month, at what rate; the usual.
I realize the answers to these questions could easily form the basis
of a small book, but I would GREATLY appreciate any and all information I
could get from anyone. Surely there are many of you out there who have
been the same route and have both good and bad stories about the exper-
ience. If you like, you can send any helpful advice directly to my
account at Rogers@Sushi. Thank you very much.

You would share the house with a young professional married couple
(non-smoking). It's in a super neighborhood, 1 mile from 280 on Lawrence
Expway and is fully furnished--the bedroom furniture can be stored if you
have your own. We used to rent to a good friend of ours for $300/month so
thats what we expect...

1. Microsoft Windows ver. 1.00, programs (on floppies) + manuals
2. Microsoft C, ver. 3, programs (2 floppies).
To give people interested in the above a chance independent of the relative
speed of mailing systems etc., I have set up the following algorithm:
For each of the two items above, I have come up with a (secret) integer
between 1 and 100. You send me a message (at most one per person and item)
saying which item you are interested in, and what you think the associated

I was at Midtown Bike Shop yesterday looking for a bike helmet. I have
decided on the ..... uh..... I forgot the name! It's made by Bell and
has those big holes in it (I think the word, "Pro" is in the name of
that particular helmet). It comes in a myriad of colors (yellow, black,
blue, white...).
If you know which one I am talking about, then please read on... Midtown
was selling this particular model for $49.95. I know that that is pretty
reasonable for a helmet, but I am sure that there has got to be a bargain
place out there that carries the Bell line with this same style. Any ideas?
I am not a member of the Price Club (yet), but before I go sign up, do you
know if they carry helmets? If they carry tires, I hope they carry other
transportation-related items. I plan to buy one in the next day or two,
so I appreciate your pearls of wisdom as soon as possible. THANKS!!!

includes tax, shipping and handling, cable, pens and some paper,
in addition to the plotter, of course.
The plotter is compatible with Cricket Graph, ColorChart,

will be demonstrated at the March 9 General Meeting of SMUG.
Details on the deal will follow in the March newsletter.
Please direct all questions to Chuck, who can be reached via

Subject: Beware of Apparent Give-Aways! (Mod. long message)
To: su-market@Sushi.Stanford.EDU
Message-ID: <12278306259.36.SOTOS@Sushi.Stanford.EDU>
Though this message is a little long, the lessons learned from it
may save you some money in the future.
I recently received a letter from "Executive International Limited," a
company of which I'd never dealt with or heard of, telling me I had
won one of:
1) a new 1986 [sic] Pontiac Fiero
2) $5000 cash
3) a 7 day, 6 night vacation to Australia, Hawaii, or Tahiti
4) A Fisher stereo + color TV + VCR
Sounds pretty good, eh? The envelope was addressed by hand, which
also seemed to suggest that I may really have won something.
So I called them (Las Vegas area code) and they were incredibly smooth
on the phone, saying things like "Oh, congratulations!" They went
through the prizes in each category, describing them in detail. With
the vacation, I would have to buy one round trip ticket, then they
would buy another, and (?) throw in the hotel charges. "And if you
win the Fiero, we hope you'd drive out to see us." From the
description of the prizes, even the lowest ranking of them (the stero
etc.) sounded pretty darn good.
All I had to do to get the prize was order a dozen lovingly described,
high-class, lifetime warranteed, pen & pencil sets for $373 (their
business is selling gifts that one executive would give to another),
so I could be a "satified customer" when they put my picture on the
back of their catalog. The exact prize that I would get would be
determined after I returned the "blue envelope" that would be included
with the pen & pencil sets.
The guy next went through incredible detail in describing the process
of claiming the prize and getting the catalog photo taken, making it
sound incredibly real. He said I could pay by credit card ("We are a
licensed bonded VISA and Mastercard account") or they would send
Federal Express to pick up my personal check tomorrow. I said I'd
call back tomorrow after I thought about it, and the guy said he'd be
available for two more hours today.
It is sounding a lot more fishy as I write this than it felt as I was
talking to them. Without making this message intolerably long, I
cannot begin to reproduce the overwhelming air of genuineness they
were conveying, even though I was extraordinarily suspicious the
moment I received the letter in the mail. I wanted that stereo set
(which I was sure I'd win).
I called the San Mateo Better Business Bureau and after I told them
the barest bones of the offer, the woman said "And they want you to buy
pens or keychains or something, right?" She recommended I avoid it.
I called the Las Vegas Better Business Bureau. The scoop on the
company is that it was registered in November 1986, making it too
recent to have generated complaints. She mentioned (1) there are
roughly 150 local businesses who use similar phone-based marketing
techniques, (2) the Postal Inspector recommends not giving credit card
account numbers over the phone, (3) Nevada state law requires that no
purchase is necessary to get the prize.
So I called the company back, mentioned the state law, and they said
"No problem, call this phone # to claim your prize." I thought, "Aha,
I'll beat them at their own game!" The phone # was a recording with
some useful info: one Fiero, one $5000 check, and two stereos were to
be given away. "The remainder" of prizes would be "vacation travel
incentives." The ticket I would have to purchase must be
*undiscounted* and such prices range from $700 to $2800, and that the
vacation offer has no cash value, either implied or explicit.
I still figured I'd risk the 22 cent stamp on the fact that I might
get lucky or that $700 might be a real bargain, but then the recording
said a notarized copy of the letter, with a photo of me, must be
received in Las Vegas in <= 48 hours. The recording then recommended
using one of the overnight delivery services.
I admitted defeat.
The way the sham works now is clear. They attempt to get you to order
$370 worth of merchandise, and seem to prefer you use a credit card.
They may or may not deliver on the prize. It is still not cheap to
get the prize without ordering merchandise ($10 overnight delivery
fee, plus photo, plus notarization). The prize they will certainly
give you is this "travel incentive" that requires an initial
investment of $700 *at least*, which many people will probably end up
not doing. It is probably significant that the letter was mailed to
my old East Coast address, where the ticket would probably have cost
closer to the top end of the spectrum. Their best weapon, however, is
that they know the prize winners desperately want this to be an honest
offer. The best psychologists do not necessarily work in hopsitals!

My housemates and I are looking for a housemate to share a 4-bedroom, 2-bath
house in Barron Park, Palo Alto. It's 3 miles from campus, a 10-15
minute bike ride or a 10 minute drive. The rent is $310, security deposit
is $125. The house is furnished, though the room isn't. The room is medium
sized with a sliding glass door out to the backyard. We have a dishwasher,
washer and dryer.
I'm a graduate student in psychology, one guy is a grad student in
applied physics and the third works for Stanford putting in some
network system. We cook independently and pretty much follow our own
schedules, but we're friendly and interactive when we're around.
The room will be available by next week.

We're both non-smokers and hope you are, too. Pets possibly OK, let's say:

House has 4 bedrooms, but we keep one spare - useful for guests, including
yours. Two bathrooms. Washing machine and drier. A large sunny kitchen (oven,
dishwasher, microwave, etc). A garden that encircles the house; your room has
it's own door that opens into garden. Stereo equipment for general use.
The house is situated near Middlefield and the Oregon Expressway, 15 minutes
to centre of campus by bike (depending on condition).
Rent is $467 /mth, plus one-third utilites.

I'm looking for a place to live. A place of my own would be nice, but
probably impractical. So I'm looking for a shared house (prob not an
apt). I'll need to find move by the end of March, I might be able to
move in sooner. Desirable features would include:
o Relaxed, friendly, co-operative, easy-going household.
Probably sharing with other students, hopefully of varied
backgrounds and interests. And non-smokers.
o The more dogs and cats and platypuses you have, the better.
I don't have any animals of my own, but I'd like to live
somewhere where there are pets around. Can help with dog-
walking.
o Within biking range of Stanford - pref less than 3 miles.
o Not too noisy.
o If you have a hot tub, so much the better ......
o For the right place, I'm willing to pay the outrageous
going rates around here.
I try to be a realist, if your place satisfies the first criterion, I'm very
interested!

University Events and Services provides a video-taping service, i.e., they
will send a technician out to tape a lecture, class, etc. (I don't know
if they rent equipment... I didn't think so, but the campus phone book entry
for them says something about "audiovisual and video equipment rental".)
I have no other information (other than a general belief that they tend to
be expensive). I suggest calling them at 3-2285.

I've also been looking at Microwave ovens recently.
For relatively large microwaves, the best price I've seen so far has been
at the Price Club in Redwood City, which was selling a 1.6 cubic foot
Toshiba with 720 watts of power for around $200. (This was two weeks ago.)
I'm not sure about all the features it has (or doesn't have)-- things
like type and flexability of controls-- but for an oven of that size and
power, the price was better than what I've seen at the few other places
I've looked (Sears & Best Products, for example).
I was also informed that Macy's will have microwaves on sale Sunday & Monday.

I may be the last person on campus to have found this out, but the Stanford
Credit Union teller at Tresidder Union is connected to the Cirrus ATM
network. This means that I can get money from my Great Western account
there. People from many other banks should be able to use it too--First
Interstate, for example, subscribes to the Cirrus Network.
All this time, I thought I had to pay a convenience penalty for the pleasure
of avoiding Wells Fargo's and SFCU's high fees, high minimum balances, and
unhelpful attitude. Now I realise that I don't even have to sacrifice
convenience for my Great Western no-minimum, no-charge, interest checking
account. Is there ANY reason to stay with Wells or SFCU?

> SFCU's high fees, high minimum balances, and unhelpful attitude...
SFCU will charge you $3/month if you have less than $500 in your
checking account. They will charge you $1 a month if you have less than
$50 in your account. There is no other charges --- no per-check charge,
no ATM use charge... I hardly call that "high fees" or "high minimum
balances." And you do get interest on both your checking and savings.
Doesn't sound so bad to me, I might as well continue on staying with them
as long as I keep on spending most of my time on campus, and I expect to
for some time...
Also, I don't know how many other banks provide this, but SFCU has the
"FASTELL" service that allows you to call the bank at anytime to ask for
account balances, transfer money between accounts, ask for the status
of any check you might've written, and even withdraw money
(they send you a check if I understand correctly). You "ask" things by
keying in codes on your touch tone phone, and it replies to you via
a computerized female voice (which sounds as good as my Amiga computer...).
I was actually disappointed to find out that it talked back at you --- I was
hoping it talked back at you with touch tone codes so that I could have
my computer understand what it said --- Then everynight my computer could
automatically dial up and get info about all my transactions that day and
download them into a file... But I don't think I want to tackle speech
comprehension, even though the speech is generated by a computer! Strange
world.

I have a checking account w/Great Western, and was very happy to discover that
ATM in July. I was considerably less happy to find out that (at that time at
least) my GW card would not work in it. GW told me that this might happen with
certain ATMs because GW uses an access code w/only 4-digits. If this has

My Apple Imagewriter II has a problem that apparently is not trivial. At
least, no one I've talked to knows how to fix it. The trouble is that
the paper pulls itself off the tractor pins. Typically, the printer will
do one continuous page or document just fine, but if I try to print a second
one without checking the pins the paper is sure to come off, start printing
at an angle, and then wad up and make a mess. This is driving me nuts.
Does anyone have:
1) Suggestions about how to fix this?
2) Suggestions about a reliable local repairperson?
Thank you!

I'm in the process of shopping for a new pair of eyeglasses (I already
have a prescription), and I'm interested in any experiences readers of
this BBoard have had with "For Eyes", one of the opticians in Town &
Country Village across from campus.
"For Eyes" seems to be a good deal less expensive than its competitors.
Their prices start at $36 for lenses & frames; another nearby optician
would charge me $36 for frames only, plus $50 for lenses.
Unfortunately, it's hard to get a sense of the \quality/ of their
products: are they less expensive because their raw materials and
optical work are of lower quality, or just because they run a high-volume,
"no frills" operation?
I'm specifically interested in knowing whether anyone who had optical
work done at "For Eyes" had their ophthalmologist check their glasses/
contacts afterwards to see if the prescription was filled correctly, and
(if so) whether it was.
I'll summarize any responses for anyone who's interested, and post them
to SU-Markets if there's overwhelming interest. Thanks.

SFCU has a particularly offensive fee; the $1/month "monthly
maintenance charge" for savings accounts. I once calculated that
if you had less than a few hundred dollars in your savings account
your account would lose money faster than it gains interest.
These charges were instituted to get the federal regulators
off SFCU's back for having insufficient assets. You see, they were
on the verge of bankruptcy a couple of years ago.
SFCU is NOT a reliable financial institution. You may like
their VISA card, but take it from me, the next time they have any
cash flow problems the first thing they'll do is cancel all the
VISA cards...like they did last time.

The French Quarter shops were closed for renovation? From what I heard
the whole Old Mill will be razed and a hotel will be built there. Or
perhaps local gourmets have united to save the French Quarter.

∂17-Feb-87 1500 LES Classified Ads
It appears to me that this bboard would be easier to read if each type of
ad appeared on a separate page, e.g. one for all "cars for sale," another
for "rental housing" and, of course, a "miscellaneous." This scheme
cannot be used on bboards outside SAIL because of software limitations
elsewhere, so I am posting this on SAIL only and recommend that responses
be edited directly on this page rather than being posted to su-market.
If it were structured this way, then CKSUM would point you at the new
stuff on any given page, but if you were not interested in used cars,
for example, you could skip all such ads with a single ⊗m.
If there seems to be a consensus in favor of this idea, I will concoct a
proposed "standard classification" scheme, probably modelled after
newspaper conventions.

Garrett,
I basically DISrecommended Quality Tune-Up, esp. on the corner
of San Antonio and El Camino, because they are a bunch of crooks. A few
years ago, they had a scan going on tune-ups (selling you massive unneeded
parts) for which they were convicted. Then last year, someone posted a
message that they had been massively ripped off by Quality Tune-up on a
smog check job. So I concluded they are still a bunch of crooks.
Sears did a decent and cheap smog check for me, although you do
have to wait.

Here is a summary of the information sent on answering machines. Thank
you to everybody who answered my message.
Andres
-Features (by Kathy Morris):
Beeperless remotes: I think they're great -- you can call your machine
and pick up messages from any touchtone phone, without needing to carry
a beeper with you. I've used this method to leave messages for other
people on my machine. One thing to check is that, if you get a machine
with beeperless remote, you can set the digits that let you listen to
your messages. One popular brand of answering machine has a one-digit
code, preset to 4. The machine I bought (a GE, I don't remember the
model number) allows you to set an 8 bit (ie, 3 digit) code.
Toll-saver is also nice (if there are messages, the phone rings only
once or twice rather than four times, so you can hang up if there are
no messages).
Voice-activated machines are good, but beware of friends who phone you
and leave their phone sitting next to a radio -- the machine will
record until it runs out of tape,
- Shops (by Jim DeLaHunt):
Where to buy: the Price Club in Redwood City. It is a discount warehouse,
with everything from socks to food to answering machines. They generally
have one or two of each brand available, and price them at 5% above wholesale.
This means CHEAP. They have a fairly good answering machine for $90, I
believe.
To buy there, you must be a member. To be a member, you must pay $25/year
and have a paycheck from Stanford (or an account with the Credit Union, or
be affiliated with any of a number of other organisations).
- Recommended/Disrecommended:
Recommended: Code-A-Phone, Panasonic, Phonemate
Disrecommended: Letel

To quote someone from net.audio, the three most important things to
remember in buying a CD player are
1) They all sound the same,
2) They all sound the same, and
3) They all sound the same.
This *may* not be true at the higher price levels. (Then again, it may...)
Find a player with the features you like from a manufacturer with
a good reputation for quality. (In other words, avoid Fisher). All
Magnavox players are made in Belgium (?) by Philips and tend to be
very cost-effective.
Flashy programming and memory are rarely useful, especially if you
listen to lots of classical music. (Let's see...I'll listen to the
3rd movment, then the 1st, then the 4th, then the 2nd!). Shuffle
play is good to keep pop discs and recordings of Chopin etudes from
becoming predicable.
